After having a week off Glenn Jr was ready to get back to racing and what better way to do that than with a double header night of racing in the NASCAR Whelen Series and the Main Series.
Glenn had been at the track most of Saturday with both the Main Event car and his Late Model NASCAR Whelen Series car going from one to the other as each practice session took place.
After practice was complete qualifying took place for the Main Event Car.
His lap of record was 14.803. After all was said and done with the inverts Glenn was starting in the outside of the front row.
Before that Glenn had to hop back over to the #32 NASCAR Whelen Series Late Model for the heat race. Glenn started 3rd in the 2nd Heat.
The race ran caution free. Glenn Jr. found out at the drop of the green flag that he had his hands full with a tight race car in the close race traffic but being a veteran and a great driver he was able to make it to the checkered flag ten laps later in the 6th position.
The pit area was a busy place with all the changes being made to the #32 Late Model and the preparations also being put in place for the 100 lap Main Event race.
Glenn took the track next for the Main Event race on the outside pole. As the green flag dropped Glenn Jr. wasted no time in making his move to the front and then pulled away from the pack where he continued to lead the race through the first 20 laps when the first caution flag flew. On the double file restart Glenn Jr. again retook the lead and pulled away. Glenn Jr. continued to lead and began to lap the field, by lap 40 he encountered some pretty heavy lap traffic that really showed what experience will do for a driver as he made his way through it with little effort. Unfortunately in racing you can’t control everything and on lap 52 the 2nd place car that had caught up to Glenn while he had been in the heavy traffic did not successfullly manuever the three wide pass on the back stretch and sent the lap car spinning into Glenn and Glenn spinning into the center of the track.
They went back to green on lap 51 but Glenn soon found out the car was not the same and the race traffic over took him while he struggled to hold onto the car. A lap later the caution was out and Glenn was in to pit to fix some damage. He restarted at the tail end of the field just as they took the green. Next caution flag flew on lap 66 and Glenn Jr was 15th . Another quick caution flew a lap later on lap 67 and Glenn Jr dropped into the pits once again to try and adjust on the car restarting 17th. The race went back green and stayed green for several laps. Glenn did the best he could to drive the damaged car but by lap 92 he pulled down and off the track unable to correct the condition finishing 15th.
The night of racing was still not over. The feature for the NASCAR Whelen Series took the Track around 11:00 PM. Glenn started from the 18th position in the field of 22 cars. Three caution flags broke up the racing action on lap 3, 16 and 22. Glenn had moved up to 14th on lap 3, 11th on lap 16 after fighting through heavy race traffic to get there and finished in the tenth position with a loose race car at the checkered flag.
So the long night of racing was complete and Glenn Jr and team are ready to move on and take on the next racing challenge at Midvale in the Main Event Series next Friday July 3rd in Midvale OH. There is another article highlighting the typical week Glenn Jr. and the team spends preparing for a race and you can read that here.
Glenn Jr and the #32 team put in a long week of work on the car and were optimistic about the night ahead as they pulled into Lake Erie on Saturday night. They were rewarded with a second place heat race finish and a fifth place finish in the feature. It was thanks to the work of the crew on the pits and some sharp driving from Glenn.
The weather was cool at Lake Erie which was was no different from the previous weeks.
Glenn Jr. went out for some practice to see how the car felt after the work was done to rebuild and fix it from the week previous.
Everything went well and they were ready to start the heat races.
Glenn was assigned the 5th place starting position in the first heat race. Seven cars total were assigned to the first heat.
The heat race took the green flag and Glenn Jr. went to work.
He had worked his way up to 4th by lap 4, into 3rd by lap 6 and at the checkered flag on lap 10 he was in the second position.
Due to some problems getting the engine to run smoothly at the start of the heat race. The crew went to work looking it over as well as making ajustments for the Feature.
The feature had the field set with the #32 starting in the 11th position. The initial start had a couple cars stack up in the middle on the track just past the flag stand and Glenn Jr. did a fantastic job of avoiding the accident by diverting through the inside of the track as the yellow flag waved. Glenn restarted in 8th after the damaged cars were removed. Glenn Jr raced his way up to 5th by lap 11 and was holding onto that spot on lap 18 when the only other caution flag waved. The rest of the laps ticked away as the race stayed green and Glenn Jr. raced side by side, lap after lap battling for the 4th spot all the way to the checkered flag.
The team was happy with gains made and Glenn Jr. will be looking forward to another double header racing weekend starting next Friday with Barberton Speedway and the Main Event Series followed by the NASCAR Whelen series on Saturday at Lake Erie Speedway. So make sure to head out to the track or check back here for updates from the track.
Glenn Jr. pulled into Lake Erie Speedway on Saturday June 6th for the second half of his double header weekend racing in the #32 in NASCAR Whelen Series. After a third place finish in the heat race the feature was an action packed race that kept Glenn Jr. busy in the drivers seat and his crew busy in the pits.
The afternoon started with the normal practice session shortly after 4PM . Glenn Jr was mentoring a rookie driver Tommy Morell making his first start at the track in the #33 car. So the pit area was busy and both drivers were busy on the track getting the cars ready for the race.
Practice went well and Glenn felt good about the car. After some adjustments they were ready for the Heat race.
Both the #32 and the #33 were set to race in the second of two Heat races. Glenn Jr. started 6th and the #33 with Tommy Morell a row behind.
The beginning of the Heat race was tricky and the flagman was busy with the caution flag restarting twice in the first two laps. After the second restart the race fell into a rhythm and Glenn started taking positions moving up to third by lap 4. Glenn held this position and dodged a few close calls through the checkered flag at lap 10. The # 33 ran a clean race and finished 10th.
This was Sponsor appreciation night at the track so the fans had the chance to come down on the track for an hour and meet and greet the drivers.
After that it was time to get the cars ready for the Feature. Glenn Jr was set to start 10th and the #33 was 20th in the lineup. So after some last minute words of advice it was down to business.
The Feature race is the last race of the night at Lake Erie and started around 10:30 PM. The first caution came out on lap 4 and Glenn Jr had taken 2 spots moving up to 8th. Two laps later was the next caution and not unlike the Heat race earlier a lot of near misses and hard racing was going on Glenn Jr was holding on to 9th. Racing resumed till lap 11 when a larger accident caused a red flag. Glenn had made his way up to 6th. On the restart Glenn held this position until he was involved in the next caution on lap 14. He made his way into the pit area and the crew went to work and got him back out before the restart. He went back to racing starting out from the rear in 15th position. He raced hard trying to recover some territory and making good gains until lap 21 he was hit from behind entering turn 4 and sent into the wall ending the night. Glenn Jr was checked out by the ambulance crew and released.
The #33 finished the night in the 11th position after surviving the chaos.
So though the weekend had very harsh ending, this team has been dealt these cards before. An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything, and in this lies the difference between great men and little men. Not to worry this will team will be back next week and ready to race for the win.
A big props goes out to the track safety team at Lake Erie for taking good care of Glenn Jr and all the drivers on race night.
The third race in the Main Event racing series took place on Friday June 5th in Zenia. Glenn Jr. driving the #6 took home around a 16th place finish due to the engine overheating.
The day in Xenia started for Glenn Jr. around 3PM with practice at a very unique and challenging track that could send even someone with a strong stomach asking for something to put it’s contents in. It is almost a circular track with a slight bit of banking at areas and a slight change of elevation from front to back stretch. The only thing it brings to mind to watch a hot lap is a roller coaster ride.
After an afternoon of practice it came time to qualify. Glenn Jr laid down a fast lap of 13.415 starting him in 17th.
The race started around 9:30PM Glenn Jr only had the Green flag for 2 laps when the caution flag flew. He restarted in 14th after gaining 2 spots on the first short run. Next caution was on lap 27 and Glenn Jr had firmly onto 14th however by the next caution on lap 44 he had forged his way into 8th. The car had been running well before an extended long caution to clean up a large wreck on lap 44, however after restarting and going back to green things inside the car began to get a little steamy. That had nothing to do with anger over the other competitors on the track, unfortunately it had everything to do with an overheating radiator. He did everything he could to make it last but that was just too many laps. He had to pull into the center of the track on lap 78 and then off the track at the lap 79 caution.
So lots of good info was gained for the next trip here in the series. Next race for Glenn is today June 6th at Lake Erie. So head out to the track or check back for updates
